In episode 16, Vinny and Roland shared a number of money saving tips. In the latest episode, we share even more tips to cut costs and tighten your budget.
[22:40] We talk about practicality versus aesthetics of Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs).
More money saving tips:
- Most everything is negotiable.
- Ever hear that at a casino, you can ask an attendant to “put the slot machine to sleep” while you go to the bathroom?
- Now is a great time to refinance your mortgage down to a lower rate.
- Shop around for a lower price on your auto insurance.
- Ask your gym if they’ll suspend your membership for 6 months.
- Ask your satellite or cable provider to suspend your TV service for 6 months.
- Bundle your TV/phone/Internet service to reduce monthly expenses.
- Drop the $25-40 data plan or texting plan on your cell phones.
- Start having conversations with your spouse about bigger ticket items. Discuss whether you can share one car. Sell property that you’re under-utilizing.
- Redbox.com vending machine for DVDs.

Hey, that's us! Thanks for visiting Lighter Footstep, Roland. I'm delighted to discover your site, too.
Great savings ideas. Here are some of the easy savings wins I just accomplished:
Cancelled HBO, which we hardly watch anymore ($10 month / $120 year)
Switched our phone and Internet to Comcast ($40 month / $480 year!)
Reduced our childcare by 3 hours per week ($150 month / $1,800 year!)
Thanks for the feedback Seth. Glad to hear you are successful at tightening the budget too.
NYTimes posted a few new articles and video regarding CFL bulbs. Also discussed quality problems.

Couple things I learned:
- If broken, double bag the remains and throw out in your regular garbage. There are small amounts of mercury in it.
- Some stores will accept burned out unbroken bulbs for proper disposal.
- Look at the Kelvin rating (or "K" rating). Soft white is 2700-3000, white is 3500-6500. The higher you go, the bluer the light gets. Daylight is the bluest.
- Don't use where light wont be on for 15 minutes. Constant cycling reduces their life.
